Hamilton Holmes and Charlayne Hunter (now Hunter-Gault) were the first two African American students to enroll at UGA in 1961. They entered the Academic Building on January 9th to register for undergraduate classes. Later that same year, Mary Frances Early also enrolled as a graduate student at the Academic Building. In 2001, the Academic Building was named for Holmes and Hunter-Gault.
