First 5 UGA Scholarship Football Players

In the fall of 1971, a decade after the University of Georgia was first desegregated, Richard Appleby, Chuck Kinnebrew, Horace King, Clarence Pope and Larry West became students at UGA. They would make history as the first African American scholarship football players at UGA. These freshmen students were signed by coach Vince Dooley and would change the face of Bulldog football and Georgia athletics.

To commemorate the legacy of “The Five,” stone plaques were installed in Reed Plaza outside of Sanford Stadium.
