Assistant Vice President and Chief of Staff
Dr. Roswell Lawrence, Jr., is the Assistant Vice President and Chief of Staff for Finance and Administration (F&A). In this role, he is responsible for overseeing F&A operations, coordinating with UGA’s academic, research, and student life areas, and ensuring positive client relationships. He evaluates, recommends, and implements methods to enhance support for faculty, staff, and students.
Lawrence also chairs a cross-functional team developing recommendations for the university’s Diversity and Inclusive Excellence Plan. Additionally, he provides governance and operational leadership for the UGA Professional Education Portal, which supports the professional development and research-related educational needs of faculty, staff, and students. Lawrence has served in this position since 2017 and has been with the Office of the Vice President for Finance and Administration since 2012.
Prior to this role, Lawrence successfully established and maintained essential university services, including academic classes, dining, recreation, transportation, parking, maintenance, and community engagement, during the launch of UGA’s Health Sciences Campus.
Lawrence joined the Finance and Administration team in Accounts Payable in 2007. He earned his BBA from the University of Georgia and a Master of Business Administration from Piedmont University. He also holds a Master of Divinity from Luther Rice University & Seminary and a Ph.D. in educational administration and policy from UGA.
Lawrence is a native of Greensboro and lives with his wife and children in Athens.
