Electric buses transform UGA’s transit system
The University of Georgia is revving up its approach to sustainability. With 33 new Proterra electric buses set to be in circulation by 2021, UGA is making the transportation industry a little greener.
Students in the College of Engineering collaborated with the UGA Office of Emergency Preparedness and Insurance & Claims Management (OEP/ICM) and the UGA Marine Institute (UGAMI) on Sapelo Island on a yearlong capstone project to develop flood control techniques for the UGAMI campus. Their work earned first-place recognition for its impact on coastal communities.
Sapelo, one of Georgia’s barrier islands, is home to UGAMI, which supports research and education in coastal ecosystems. The institute’s campus is situated along a tidal creek, making it vulnerable to severe weather events.
Engineering students Clare Deberry, Skylar Gray, Benjamin Smith and Sarah Younce were tasked with assessing the site, developing storm surge models, and designing potential solutions to mitigate flooding that could endanger UGAMI’s staff and campus.

Amanda Ganger’s career has all added up to her current position. “I always try to keep a positive attitude about anything that happens,” she said. “Work hard and never get discouraged. That project you’re asked to serve on that seems like it will never end will ultimately be a growing experience.”
The University of Georgia has been awarded $7.46 million under the Federal Transit Administration’s Grants for Buses and Bus Facilities Program to purchase an additional 13 electric buses. The funding, along with UGA’s 30% matching share, will grow the university’s fleet to 33 electric buses, representing a tremendous step forward in reducing emissions and increasing opportunities for experiential learning and research.
The University of Georgia Human Resources department is leading the charge in developing a new staff competency model that will benefit UGA staff in the coming years. A staff competency model organizes job responsibilities into clusters that help to frame the knowledge, skills, abilities and other attributes needed to perform effectively in any staff role across the university.
Gregg Hudson can tell a lot from a simple slice of cheese pizza. He can tell if the oven is running hot or cold. He can tell how long it was baked. He can tell if the person preparing it has mastered the proper balance of crust, sauce, cheese and toppings. And it’s his goal to make sure his customers love every bite
